A new meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embriology (ESHRE) is to be held in Barcelona next week (from July 1st to 4th). This annual event represents the most important meeting in the field of assisted reproduction. More than 7000 specialists, including gynecologists, embryologists and, in general any professional related to human reproduction will take part in the summit.

As usually, Reproducción Bilbao will take an active role in the event. A paper on the single embryo transfer issue will be defended during the meeting. Moreover, our medical director, Dr. G. Barrenetxea MD, PhD, will co-chair a scientific session of selected oral communications on “Biology of oocyte and cumulus complex”.

Regarding the presentation, the study question that professionals of RB have raised is why do many specialists still transfer 2 or more embryos in most assisted reproduction procedures. After a retrospective review of our results, the answer is that we should not accept multiple pregnancies as an “unavoidable” side effect of assisted reproduction in the 21st Century. Improvements in embryo culture systems, freezing-thawing procedures and genetic assessment of embryos, among others, should be fully (and really) incorporated into practice.
