We do know that thanks to assisted reproduction a pregnancy will be achieved in\u00a0most cases. However, many times, the road is long and tortuous. And, as a\u00a0consequence, many patients cannot withstand such a long way and decide to\u00a0discontinue treatments before conceiving. The question we should be able to\u00a0answer is why some couples discontinue their treatments.<\/p>\n
Research focusing on treatment\u2019s dropouts has been performed. Both physical and\u00a0psychological burden are the most mentioned causes of treatment discontinuation.\u00a0Reduction the time to birth (i.e. the period of time from the initial visit to an\u00a0assisted reproduction center and the achievement of a pregnancy) implies many\u00a0issues. First, the diagnostic work-up should be simplified avoiding useless\u00a0diagnostic tests. Second, nowadays, we may propose more comfortable and safer\u00a0ovarian stimulation strategies (using GnRH antagonists instead agonists or by\u00a0administering single doses products) thus shortening the treatment, reducing\u00a0injections and avoiding ovarian hyperstimulation syndromes. Third, laboratory\u00a0procedures allow us to select the embryo with the highest chance of implantation\u00a0(incubating embryos into video-time- lapse systems, selecting genetically the\u00a0embryo, transferring on day 5, avoiding multiple pregnancies).<\/p>\n
But even with these advances, many cycles result in failed attempts. In such cases,\u00a0treatment burden should be reduced by better care organization and support for\u00a0patients. At this point patients should be well informed, have the opportunity to\u00a0discuss values and worries about treatment and receive advice to decide whether\u00a0to continue or not treatment.<\/p>\n
