Reassuring findings at ESHRE 2015 – By Reproducción Bilbao
Reassuring findings at ESHRE 2015: assisted reproduction is not associated to a worse academic performance of children (if any, to a better one).
Pregnancies resulting from assisted reproductive treatments (ART) are associated with a higher risk of pregnancy complications compared to spontaneously conceived pregnancies, mainly due to the higher incidence of multiple births. Multiple pregnancies are associated with a higher incidence of preterm deliveries, and related complications.
However, there is also a discussion on the differences between single newborns delivered from natural conception and assisted reproduction pregnancies.
In this field, the scientific presentation by AL Spangmose Pedersen from Denmark at ESHRE 2015 in Lisbon, is reassuring. In the study the academic performance of adolescents aged 15 to 16 years born after spontaneous and assisted reproduction pregnancies is compared. Even though ART children have higher risks of preterm birth and low birth weight, ART adolescents have similar school performance. Furthermore, no differences were found among twins.
Good news for the infertile population either before or after an assisted reproduction procedure.
